How Can The Church Support Foster And Adoptive Families?

Season 5, Episode 42- The Honestly Speaking Parenting Podcast

It’s a big question we receive often, from church leaders and families in the trenches: how can the church better support foster and adoptive families?

S5-E42 Art.001

Unfortunately, over the past 15 years we’ve been on this journey, we’ve seen a few churches get this extremely right, but many get it extremely wrong. Personally, our family has walked through a few situations where the church was no support at all. But, we believe in the church and the impact it can have in this world, and for foster and adoptive families.

That’s why we’re discussing some key steps the church can take to better support families who are in the trenches of foster care and adoption on today’s episode of Honestly Speaking.

Notes And Quotes From The Show.

Here’s a quick rundown of the 4 keys that Mike talked about during the show…

  1. Create a safe space, that’s judgement free.
  2. Provide support that is genuine.
  3. Provide resources (such as training sessions, support groups, interviews with key influencers)
  4. Carve out space in your budget to financially support foster and adoptive families.
  5. Continue to encourage families to keep going.

Your guidelines, Mike, are a great place for a church to start.

As it happens, our church contacted me not an hour after I listened to your podcast. They called to tell me that they wanted to give our family more support and encouragement than they had been and wanted to sit down with us to see how they could help. This came out of the blue. I’ve seen our church reflect our Savior’s image and likeness so well, so many times, but having them seek to bless our family specifically leaves us overwhelmed with thankfulness. The timing is amazing, given some of the things our family is facing. God, as always, is right on time.

    • I’m so glad to hear this Allison. And so awesome that your church sought you out to ask this vital question. That’s a win!
